The Death and Martyrdom of St Saturninus (with detail)
1150-80
Marble
Benedictine Abbey, Saint-Hilaire-d'AudeI’ve never seen an image of the martyrdom of St Sernin (St Saturninus) of Toulouse even though I teach his pilgrimage church ALL the time! He converted the daughter of the Roman governor of Toulouse. He was tied to the tail of a wild bull in the forum, the bull was goaded into a run, and dragged St Sernin to his death. The church is built on the place where his body detached from the bull.

Here is a picture of J.R.R. Tolkien looking at some flowers in a greenhouse. Apparently, he was the worst person to take walks with because he liked to stop and observe every tree he passed very carefully. We can only assume that he did this because he was waiting for them all to reveal their true Ent nature and speak to him. Ents do speak slowly, after all. They were probably between words while he was watching.

The right hand of Luisa Roldan’s Saint Ginés de la Jara, made about 1692. She created the saint’s form with wood boxes, then attached separately carved hands, feet, head, and robes from blocks.
